Atomic’s first customers went live on the Openserve fibre network this week and we have IPv6 working!
About Openserve
Yes, Telkom is not the company with the best reputation. When we started Atomic we wanted to only offer services on independent Open Access fibre networks and we did not want to deal with legacy PPPoE/Radius systems. We ideally also wanted to offer Gigabit speeds to all our customers. So this feels like a bit of a compromise but our thinking is below.
Openserve, the wholesale division of Telkom, which operates its fibre infrastructure, has been making many positive changes over the last five years. We had a few friends and customers ask for Atomic internet (and Epic service levels) on Openserve fibre so we decided to join their network.
Why now?
- We noticed a trend of Atomic customers with Octotel, Frogfoot and Vumatel fibre moving to fibre coverage areas where they could only get Openserve fibre
- Openserve introduced a new way for ISPs to connect to their network recently
- Openserve’s LAC-LNS / L2TP tunnel model allows us to control the IPs customers get when they connect
- Openserve supports IPv6 now which we have tested and enabled successfully
- Openserve’s network has a reputation for being very stable
- Openserve offers up to 500Mbps line speeds, not exactly Gigabit, but fast enough
- Openserve’s IPC pricing (traffic on their underlay network) was radically reduced and their 10Gbps port fee pricing is reasonable
- The Openserve Premium Fibre Connect service is great for small businesses in need of a quick repair time SLA. Home users can also buy this add-on to have their fibre repaired within a business day.
Yes, it’s Telkom, and yes there is a lot of legacy technology in the background, but it’s also the network which is most often available as a 2nd fibre network or backup network. We have tested load balancing and fail-over with an Octotel line and an Openserve fibre line and are happy with the results. This makes for a good value dual fibre solution for small and medium businesses or people working from home.
